Fine pruning is a specialized technique applied to ornamental trees, designed to enhance their natural and balanced shape. This method involves making precise, smaller cuts using hand pruners, carefully executed over time to ensure the health and aesthetics of the tree.
During fine pruning, our pruning specialists focus on removing smaller branches rather than larger ones, preserving the tree's structure and promoting vigorous growth. This technique is particularly effective for trees like Japanese Maples, dogwoods, magnolias, stewartias, smaller fruit trees, and select evergreens.

What We Prune
Specimen & Ornamental Trees
Prevent disease spread by removing infected branches, reduce fire risk, improve tree health/structure and enhance overall aesthetics.

Fruit Trees

Experience Behind Every Cut
Co-founder John Martin brings more than 20 years of horticultural and pruning experience to Arbutus. His background includes horticultural training through Edmonds College, years of experience as an ISA Certified Arborist, advanced pruning education with Bess Bronstein, and service on the Poulsbo Tree Board.
John’s experience is shared throughout our pruning team through hands-on training and continued education, shaping the thoughtful, plant-specific approach behind every cut.
Seasonal Pruning
Pruning timing depends on the plant, its growth cycle, and the goals of the work. We schedule dormant, corrective, and summer pruning according to each plant’s specific needs and the appropriate time for pruning, with advance planning when needed.
Seasonal availability is limited, particularly from May through November. Advance scheduling is recommended.
